Costume College Joint Noelle's Project 2011

We (by “we” I actually mean the ‘Other Noelle’) have decided what the Double Noelle Project will be for CoCo this year.  (Is there a better name than the “Double Noelle Project”?)

The original inspiration picture was found via “OMG that dress!” tumblr.  (Many thanks to Other Noelle for finding this gown, and telling me about “OMG that dress!”)  The gown is at the V&A museum, and is available to view in their collections online.

My very, very least favorite part of costuming is undergarments – specifically shaping garments.  More than half of my corset/stay/bodies collection are purchased (bad costumer, BAD!)……I need to go through my stash and see if either of my Elizabethan bodies will work for this gown.  I’m really hoping one of them will, because I certainly don’t have the money right now to purchase a pair of stays, and I really, really don’t want to make ‘em.  ;)

I have to run off and make dinner, but perhaps tonight I’ll post about fabric options.

I really need to buckle down on the kirtles because I can’t touch a new project until they are all done!

  1. We need some sort of Venture Brothers style handshake and bat-signal I think.

I look at this list and think "oh god, what have I done?"

And while you sit back on your Laurels (HAHAHA see what I did there???), I will have to figure out how to make stays. Awesomesauce.

p.s. other potential project names names for years to come:
    Double Trouble
    2 L's (well, 4 actually)

p.p.s. can we design a logo and embroider it secretly on our outfits??? like (dNp) or something??? maybe on the bottom back of the hem or the inside of a cuff or something? It can be our label.

p.p.s.s. We could then use that logo for the bat-signal, although i like the circle with the L in it and the line going through it diagonally for that one.

  2. WOW. This is quite the project you gals have dreamed up! I didn't know you had definitely decided to go to CoCo!

I think you can use elizabethan stays without issue. The shape they give is almost the same. I used my tudor stays under my blue anglaise and it worked great.

I can't wait for the next post about this project! Fabric options, trims, embroidery... awesomesauce!

  3. I can't wait to see the finished project! If anyone I know can pull this off, it is definitely you... or Noelle squared! It's not much help, but if you get toward the end and don't feel like making more undergutchies I'd be happy to donate my panniers to the effort.
